William Munt workhouse porter

William's story

Williams story came to me by chance and for a long time seemed a desperately sad tale. it is only now that I have managed to put the flesh on William's bones. William is both my first cousin four times removed by Thomas Munt the Younger born 1753 and Mary Hughes and Thomas Munt and Jane Robbins.

I first came across William whilst looking for poor inmates in The Headington Union minute book in Oxford's West Gate library. (The Headington Union covered the parishes including Headington, Wheatley, Cuddesdon, Waterperry), all  traditional Munt territory.

I was looking for "ag labs" on hard times, but came across a Wheatley Munt made good.  My interest grew as the tale unfolded, William was confirmed to the position of porter, fell in love with a nurse slightly older than himself  and was forced to seek another position, elsewhere.

Having found the marriage of William Munt and Hannah Hawkins in the St Andrews Headington parish church in 1853,I had a starting point. I was able to locate them on the 1881 census, but then my trail went cold.  William and Hannah remained in a folder and the back of my subconscious for a couple of years until September 2006.
William was merely a character who might or might not be any relation to My Munt Families. It was probable that he was, but at this time there was no proven link.   With the passage of time my research skills and knowledge improved . My family tree had grown enormously and I picked up the thread once more. Lo and behold, from his wedding details I tied him to his father John and thus affixed him to the tree. William had been brought home. William story turned out to be a long full life with a surprise ending.
