History of the family
The Funge or latterley Fonge families can be traced back to John Funge born 1765 and his marriage to Jane Lucket born about 1775 of Forest Hill in 1795, quite easily through parish registers. Prior to 1795 John was living in Oakley, Bucks but moved to Waterperry after his marriage. The family then established roots in Waterperry and remained there for over 170 years.
The name was changed from Funge to Fonge by James Funge born 1863, persuaded that the name needed anglicising by the Curzon family of Waterperry house.
For Further reading see; "Waterperry. The story of an Oxfordshire Village". by Leslie Fonge.
There are Fung's and Funges recorded at Thame going back to the early 1600's family lore sugests that the family is one and the same , though as yet I have still to prove the link. Wills and other Interesting documents exist at Oxfordshire County Record Office for the Thame Funges, which show the families to be quite well off. They were bakers and farriers and left legacies for the poor of the parish in their wills.
